CULTURAL VILLAGES SIGHTSEEING
Cultural Villages Sightseeing starts with the village of Pyrgos, which is known as the island’s “historic monument”. Built on the top of a hill, this settlement holds an 18th century Venetian castle. Exploring the remains of the fortress, will be cleared why the danger of pirates attacks, made the locals to fortify the area and built it into small alleys and circle shape roads. At the center of the castle, where the church of The Virgin Mary and the chapel of The Holy Trinity are located, you will enjoy the most amazing view of the island. The town is surrounded by vineyards, chapels and churches, narrow cave houses with charming balconies and pebbled paths.
Next stop at Megalochori, one of the most beautiful traditional villages of the island. This local settlement hold typical and classical Cycladic houses, and neoclassic buildings dug in the volcanic rock, blending together with harmony. You also find the famous picturesque tower bell and the white churches with blue domes.
Discover Emporio, the entry to another past era and the island commercial center during the Venetian occupation. In Medieval times, the inhabitants of this village used to build their houses side by side in small picturesque streets, so that they could protect themselves against the pirates. Walk the narrow & picturesque pathways of the Venetian castle and take memorable photos overlooking the 3km volcanic black beach.
Next destination at Akrotiri village, which was one of the 5 fortified areas of the island in medieval times. The “fisherman” village holds the Red and White Beach, the lighthouse of the island and the Akrotiri Kastelli. This fortress, built on the 1st century of the Venetian colonization was also known as “La Ponta”. The castle is surrounded by a complex of houses and has a terrific view of the south of the Caldera.
In Akrotiri, is also located a local family farm, which offers high quality of handmade traditional products, that do not contain any preservatives or chemical additives and offer you a unique taste and quality. Taste local Fava, sun dried tomato, capers, caper leaves, tomato paste, traditional sweets and the family wine.
